Welcome to the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering
Departmental Overview
The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering focuses on transforming raw materials into valuable, usable products. It bridges the gap between molecular sciences (chemistry, biology) and practical engineering
The academic framework of the Busitema University Chemical and Process Engineering Department revolves around three core pillars:
Chemical Engineering: Teaching fundamental thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, and fluid mechanics operations.
Agro-processing Engineering: Focusing on post-harvest handling, value addition, and building machinery to process local crops.
Food Technology: Prioritizing unit operations in food processing, quality assurance, food safety, and cold-chain logistics
The department operates heavily as an applied research hub. Students routinely design and fabricate prototype machinery tailored for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in East Africa. Recent and notable Busitema University Repository projects include:
Biofuels & Biomass: Fabrication of rice-straw briquette densifiers and biomass tray dryers for cassava mash.
Agricultural Automation: Designing motorized bean threshers, grain storage silos, and cocoa-pod husk value addition mechanisms.
Food & Oil Extraction: Engineering cold-press avocado oil extractors, small-scale soybean oil refineries, and motorized pineapple juicing machines.
