Dr. Joseph Ddumba Lwanyaga is a water and environmental engineer with research interests in hydrological modeling, river system dynamics, pollutant tracking, and sustainable salt resource development. He holds a PhD in Engineering from Makerere University and currently serves as Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Water Resources Engineering at Busitema University.
His work addresses critical environmental challenges, particularly mercury contamination in freshwater systems, corrosion in hypersaline environments, and the optimization of solar salt recovery. He is Principal Investigator on several projects, including a WEAP-based water quality simulation for the Okame River and postdoctoral research on brine-induced material degradation in Lake Katwe—funded by the Carnegie/CECAP initiative.
Dr. Lwanyaga has published extensively on thermodynamic modeling of brine evaporation, low-wind energy technologies, and climate-adaptive housing. He collaborates with regional and international partners including Makerere University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and local engineering institutions.
He actively mentors graduate students and advocates for practical, community-oriented engineering solutions that support water safety, environmental protection, and sustainable livelihoods in East Africa.
